Summer Wall Print, “Horseneck Beach #1”
We’ve been going down to the beaches in Westport, MA for some years, I admit. We love it, there. I’ve seen beaches over the years….all around the country, lots of beautiful beaches. And yet, there is something serenely beautiful about this stretch of beach called, “Horseneck Beach #1.” Yes, the beaches here have been degraded by storms in recent years, but in my mind, this place is very special. Maybe those evenings in the water riding waves as the sun sets to my right and the moon rises simultaneously to my left….have left this indelible image in me– no doubt, these memories comprise much of my entire experience, here.
This image comes from a series of small studies of couples on Horseneck Beach, acrylic paintings at a scale of 7″ x 5″, of which this is one. Even I am impressed that such a small scale original can in the world of digital tech yield larger prints of quality….using pH neutral paper and pigment, and make this proposition work. At some point, if I can try one of these beachscapes at a scale of 6 FEET x 4’…I certainly will give it a shot, maybe next year.
What is better than a day on the beach in late summer? The season has flown by, crazy May…now crazy September…looks like times may become a lot crazier between here and election day. This is my “business advice,” for the week– You know of my bias, don’t you? I am not one who puts a lot of stock in “offering business advice.” I find the exercise boring, in the main. But, in this case, I find it useful to have a handful of locations in the world that are truly special, that provide a a kind of mental, emotional, even spiritual solace. Westport’s Horseneck Beach is one such place, for me. No business transpires in this context– although I could take my phone out on the beach to push along certain projects of one kind or another. But I do not. The beach, sand, winds, waves, sights, sounds, air, light….all come first. So, in the evening, when I get home from Horseneck Beach, the world is as if a new place. I am cleansed, free of all sorts of baggage, preoccupations, worries, concerns…I can get out of the car with a new sense of can-do…and head to the shower where I can complete the experience by rinsing off the salt and the sand before bed.
