Fall Prints “Bristol Aggie Floral“
This image, “Bristol Aggie Floral,” I snapped while touring the local agricultural school one fall afternoon, on a Sunday. The school, Bristol Agricultural, was in the midst of a $100M upgrade program at the time. The results, from my distant perspective, appear to be spectacular. I am so glad that we have such a resource in this locality. Here was an exhibit of floral presentations– this particular one stood out. I confess, the image grows on me over time. It is one that carries the attitude, flavor, colors of the holiday season in such an unusual way. “Business Advice” for day: Here just after Thanksgiving, on Cyber Monday, I’m told people all over our country are shopping on-line. Is this so? Today is the day for big sales . Today is the day to call maximum attention to goods and services most suitable for sale during this holiday season. Today is the day upon which legions of companies claim to depend in order to make some large percentage of their annual profit. Shop…now!, condensensed into a single day.
My notion is, post Thanksgiving, we would do well to carry the real spirit of this holiday into the Advent season; one of reverence, repentance and fasting. We do not need to sign on to any of the hype around shopping, consuming, gathering ever more stuff– many of us have enough stuff. In this context, the Advent season takes on a perspective much more in keeping with a simple life, a dignified life, a simple world, a simple planet, in which we may acknowledge each other rather than another ‘thing’ bought on sale in the rush after Thanksgiving.
With December comes the beginning of Advent, the Advent Season, the telling of the single story which more than any other binds western civilization together over 2000+ years— more so than any other. Let’s try this spirit on for size, today on Cyber Monday, shall we?
